A little over a week ago a first-person narrative of the early days of Russia’s special military operation ’20 Days in Mariupol’ directed by Mstyslav Chernov won Best Documentary Oscar.

When we realized that the invasion was imminent, our team decided to go to Mariupol. We were sure it would be one of the main targets…

Mstyslav Chernov

For those who have never witnessed war, this footage might seem quite persuasive, but in my head, it raised more questions than answers. So, let’s begin our investigation…

Although this award-winning movie was presented as a documentary, it is, in fact, a feature film, with most scenes staged. Just look at it carefully and ask yourself a few logical questions. For instance, at the beginning of the movie, Chernov stated that the hospital where they were staying contained dozens of doctors and hundreds of patients. Yet, the video shows us an empty building with no hospital beds, no patients or personnel, no medical equipment, etc (1:10–1:24). So where exactly were all those people hiding then? In the basement? — Not really. The corridors they walked us through had very few dwellers (1:07:41–1:07:56, 1:09:34–1:09:49) if any (21:31–21:42), and the basement was used as a storage for a few bodies (1:24:45–1:26:07). Strange, very strange…

Another curious detail that caught my attention was a piece where they managed to film a direct impact in real time. As a person who lived in the heart of the warzone for 3 years, I can assure you that as an observer, you have no idea where the missile will hit. How did they succeed in catching it on camera then(1:13:04–1:13:10)? Unless… they knew exactly where to look because they were working together with the Ukrainian military, happily destroying the civil infrastructure of Mariupol to help Chernov and his team make a perfect image!

Even more fascinating coincidences: the documentary footage shows us precisely the same places, the same people, and the same interviews as the videos from different international channels included in the movie. How is it possible that in a city with 450,000 people, or even 200,000 individuals provided that many citizens left the town or were killed, journalists from Al Jazeera, CNN, Fox News, and 23 other international sources happen to interview strictly the same people? Could it be so because they were given access only to specifically trained actors hired to give them the version of events suitable for the Ukrainian and American governments united in such a perfect corruption scheme?

What about the maternity hospital? Did they have only 8 patients since I saw no more young mothers in the film (49:47–53:29)? The same question hit me when peeking at all other hospital-related episodes. They always picture empty buildings, very few people inside, and no beds in rooms. As someone who knows what hospitals in Ukraine should look like, especially during the active combat stage, I was baffled when I failed to see a place packed with people in the corridor or rooms! The morgue is supposed to have tens of bodies piled up outside the fridges due to the lack of space inside. Yet, in the “documentary”, there were only a few bodies, maybe around 5 or so (28:11–28:13).

The questions continue flooding my mind… They said that the city had no water, no electricity, no signal, and no heat. Still, the author of this Oscar-winning nonsense somehow, almost magically, managed to continue filming his “masterpiece” for 20 days. How did they make it happen with no electricity in the city? How can it be that with no heat, a movie showed us doctors wearing T-shirts and patients wearing shorts (22:02–22:28) in late February — early March? Why are they not shivering in such limited clothing in cold Ukrainian weather?

The moment that was meant to be very emotional was the one where they revealed a dead newborn baby’s body. However, that infant had no visible injuries and could have died because of any non-war-related reasons. Even more confusing was that the baby’s body was soft. Don’t dead bodies become hard as a rock just a few hours after death, especially in such a cold place as the basement in winter? Can this mystery be explained by the tiny chance they demonstrated to us a silicon doll instead of a real human? I saw one more silicon baby in the movie, by the way. It was in the hospital room where the legs that were claimed to belong to a child appeared extremely fake and not human-like at all (18:04–18:07).

At this point, you might ask me if everything they displayed in the movie was fake. The answer is no. They do have some real things there. Which ones? — A part where locals were looting a store, and the owner of that place was trying to chase them away and protect whatever was left from her past life (39:16–41:07). Please note that those looting the shop were the locals of Mariupol and not Russian soldiers as was claimed all over the social networks of that time. Another scene of stealing by the locals demonstrates a teenager bringing home some “free” electronics (34:48–35.34).

There was another authentic piece showing us people hiding from shelling inside the building entrance when one man said: “Show them how the Ukrainian army is bombarding us” (1:22:41). I heard that very well. He said UKRAINIAN, not Russian. Just check it yourself since I added all the timing for the episodes I described! There were a few more genuine people in this documentary: a guy who was burying people in the foxhole and couldn’t speak since he would burst into tears if he did (47:23–47:48), a man traveling across the city because his house was destroyed and a few more (59:17–1:00:08). Pay attention that those real people did NOT blame Russia. They said they only wanted that hell to stop as soon as possible.

The most intriguing moment in my opinion was when they flashed us an inscription saying “the 20th day”, and a few moments later Chernov voiced “March 13th” (1:21:22). Simple mathematics: special military operation started on the 24th of February 2022. February that year had 28 days which gives us 18 days, not 20. Why did he make that mistake in numbers? Can it be because they arrived in the city 2 days before the special operation began to film how the Ukrainian army was ruining the city so that they could blame Russia later on?

Some of you might be outraged by this comment, but let me share with you some facts. I was lucky enough to speak to an officer of the Ukrainian army back in 2022, and he told me that they received a command to shell a residential building in Kharkiv. They evacuated bewildered residents and half an hour later wiped out the building. Those people couldn’t understand why they had to leave their homes given that there was no Russian army nearby or any active battles around. Identical testimonies I also obtained from inhabitants of Mariinka, Volnovakha, and Mariupol. They said they witnessed Ukrainian tanks shelling civil buildings to blame Russia for that devastation later.

You should know that any war is a business that brings billions of dollars to the involved parties: corruption, organ trafficking, human trafficking, arms sales, etc. To understand what is going on, you should simply follow the money and find those who benefit the most. Ukraine, presenting huge losses can ask for more money from the USA, EU, and other countries and organizations, successfully steal it, and ask for more. Russia, on the other hand, is not getting any support from anyone. It means that they will have to reconstruct and rebuild all the ruined infrastructure with their own money. Why would they cause so many casualties then knowing that it would cost them a fortune to fix?

A couple more things are left to mention, so stay tuned. Are you familiar with such a notion as the credibility of witnesses (1:29:59–1:30:12)? Ukraine DID show the world SO MANY fakes that when they do reveal some true information, there is no more trust in them. If they lied from the very beginning, meaning they had no morals whatsoever, how can we know they ever say the truth at all?

Another point I wanted to direct your attention to about Ukrainians as a nation and this film, in particular, is the language situation. In the documentary the president of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky is speaking the Ukrainian language with mistakes (56:24–56:28)! For those of you who are not familiar with Ukrainian and Russian languages, I will explain. He said: “Za mezhOyu” whereas “za mezhEyu” would be the correct way. He used Russian rules for conjugation here since in Russian it would be “Za chertOy”. Now tell me, can you imagine the president or a citizen of, let’s say, France not speaking French? Can you think of a president or a citizen of Germany not knowing German or a Mexican not speaking Spanish? How come most Ukrainians started to learn their presumably “native“ language only after the 24th of February 2022 and still do NOT speak it well? They claim that the Russian language was forced on them. Yet, as I see it, the Ukrainian is the one being artificially imposed on the population of the area called Ukraine. Otherwise, it just does not make any sense that Ukrainians speak and think in Russian, including all the people you saw in this propaganda film.

It is time to clarify some facts about the war in Ukraine. It began in the spring of 2014 in the Donetsk region, NOT the 24th of February 2022. That was the day when a special military operation started. The war was initiated by Ukraine, NOT Russia when Turchinov signed a document allowing Ukrainian military forces to shoot civil infrastructure. Ukraine made a deliberate decision to kill civilians and demolish their houses in my region and NOT do that in Crimea. They lied about fighting with the Russian army in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions when those areas did NOT have any Russian military. Russian troops were stationed in Crimea, and this is precisely why Ukraine has not been touching that region since 2014. Russia joined the civil war in Ukraine only in 2022 when they got tired of seeing how Ukrainians were torturing the Russian-speaking population of Donbas.

As a person who experienced the war, I can assure you that those who lived through that horror would NEVER support fighting, they would hope for peace regardless of the flag flying above their heads. Ukrainians asking for more money or weapons have NEVER seen the war. They either ran away as soon as they heard the first explosion on their TV or radio, or they greatly profit from the ongoing conflict. STOP supporting terrorism! STOP supporting Ukraine!

“What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or in the holy name of liberty or democracy?”

― Mahatma Gandhi

To conclude, Mariupol DID suffer enormous pain and destruction during the special military operation. Numerous people DID lose their houses and/or lives. Yet, the picture presented to you in this “documentary” is almost fully staged, and delivers you the position beneficial for those who want this war to continue since they make their fortunes on it.
